Once a Quarry now a Paradise: The Inspiring Story of Haller Park in Mombasa

Travel, Relax, Explore, Learn, Heal.

Haller Park is the living miracle nestled along the Mombasa Malindi highway in North Coast of Mombasa. The existence of Haller Park today is prove that nature can heal itself when given a chance. It was once a barren limestone quarry, but now it is Kenya’s most inspiring environmental success stories and a must-visit destination for nature lovers, learners, photographers and travelers seeking peace, renewal and exploration.

Haller Park History – From Barren Quarry to Lush Haven

Did you know that the site we now know as Haller Park was unbelievably a limestone quarry in the 1950’s. It was operated by Bamburi Cement which is now part of Lafarge. Just to explain about Lafarge and not leave you hanging…That time the quarry was under Bamburi Cement Company, one of the renowned cement producers in Kenya. Later on, Bamburi Cement partnered with Lafarge Group a global construction and materials company headquartered in France. It is this partnership that brought in the international expertise that was implemented to support the environmental rehabilitation. This collaboration played a key role in the barren quarry transformation to what is now called Haller Park, a thriving symbol of sustainable restoration. By 1970’s the quarry land had become so dusty, dry, lifeless and a desolate wasteland. However, a savior landed. Dr. Rene Haller, a Swiss ecologist took that challenge and restored the land which is now a beautiful haven.

Dr. Rene Haller started doing simple experiments planting hardy tree species such as Coconut palms, Casuarina, Damas etc. These trees could grow in the poor rocky soil. Over time the area began to transform. Ecosystem took over naturally, the trees created shade, improved soil fertility which encouraged new life to thrive. The wetlands formed naturally, the fishponds were established and there was home for wildlife to thrive.

Today as we talk, the once a wasteland, a degradation of an industrial project, has become a global model for ecological restoration to be emulated. Haller park remains a living proof that when there is respect and dedication to protect our environment, even the most damaged land can be brought back to life.
